Richmond Stampede Bike Race

2024 Richmond Stampede bike race

May 18, 2024

25 and 50 mile races

The race starts at 10:00 AM.  Approximately 100 riders are expected to participate.

The 25 mile race will start and end in Richmond.  The route will go north through Cove to Franklin, then west to the Cornish area, then south and west to end again in Richmond.  The route map is here: https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/4799651959

The 50 mile race will begin in Richmond and follow the 25 mile race course through the Cove and Franklin areas, then will go north to Preston to the Preston fairgrounds rest stop.  The race will then go west and south to the Weston area, and continue south to a rest stop at the Halls Corner intersection in the Lewiston area.  The race will then continue south and east back to Richmond, and will end in a sprint up to the finish line at Cherry Peak ski resort.  The route map is here:  https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/4799650435

We will need at least two operators for Net Control, one or two for the start/finish lines and road to Cherry Peak, one each for the Preston and Halls Corner rest stops, and two sweep vehicles.  We may have a mobile mechanic truck which could use a radio operator.   We will need around 10 to 12 radio operators total.

We will be using both Ham radio and GMRS operators for all positions EXCEPT the sweeps.  At least one person in the sweep vehicles should be a Ham with previous bike race experience following riders and using APRS.  No previous race experience is necessary for any of the other positions.

We will be using the Sedgwick repeater (pending authorization) and the Richmond GMRS repeater.

Net Control will be at the Richmond City communications center.  Starting line is TBD but will be in the downtown Richmond area.  The starting line operator(s) should stay in place until the 25 mile riders finish the ride, then move to the finish line at Cherry Peak.  We may station one finish line operator along the route to Cherry Peak in a cell dead zone.

All operators should have at least a good hand held radio with experience using either the Sedgwick and/or Richmond GMRS repeater.  In addition we will use a Ham and GMRs simplex channel for back up communications.   If you have a go box with a portable radio setup, that may be used as well.  Mobile operators should have a vehicle mounted 2 meter Ham radio with APRS capability.  If you don’t have an ARPS enabled radio we will probably be able to borrow them from BARC.

We may also use City Public Works radios for communications between race and City officals and Net Control.

Training will be held approximately a month prior to the event.  Training will be held in Richmond at the City Communications Center.
